The provincial government says 16 new school projects will be developed in smaller cities and rural communities as part of Budget 2026, aiming to address growing student enrollment across the province.

The new projects add to 63 previously announced school developments that will also receive support through Budget 2026. According to officials, the combined projects are expected to create space for approximately 200,000 students.

Danielle Smith, Premier of Alberta, said the investment is intended to ensure students receive quality education regardless of where they live.

“Every student deserves the best education we can give them, no matter where they live,” Smith said in a news release. “That’s why Budget 2026 is making targeted investments to plan and design schools in the communities that need them most, including smaller cities and rural areas.”

The government says the projects are also aimed at easing overcrowded classrooms. Over the past three years, about 80,000 additional students have enrolled in schools across Alberta, creating increased pressure on the education system.

Officials noted that all of the newly announced school projects will be located in some of the fastest-growing communities in the province.
