The Canadian government has proposed holding a special parliamentary debate on the escalating crisis in the Middle East and its potential impact on Canadians living abroad.

Steven MacKinnon, the Liberal House leader and Canada’s transport minister, announced on Sunday that the government has suggested to opposition parties that a debate be held Monday evening in the House of Commons of Canada.

The proposed discussion would focus on the ongoing hostilities in Iran and the situation facing Canadians currently in the region.

MacKinnon shared the proposal in a post on X, stating that the government believes Parliament should address the rapidly developing situation and its implications for Canadian citizens abroad.

Media representatives from the New Democratic Party and the Conservative Party of Canada did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the proposed debate.

Meanwhile, the office of Mark Carney did not confirm whether the prime minister would personally attend the parliamentary discussion.

In a statement released late Sunday, the Prime Minister’s Office said Carney had earlier convened the government’s Incident Response Group with ministers and senior officials. The meeting focused on reviewing the ongoing hostilities in the region and assessing the potential risks and impacts for Canadians.
