Canada’s Government House Leader Steven MacKinnon says discussions with dissatisfied opposition MPs are ongoing, just a day after the governing party secured its fourth MP to cross the floor in recent months.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday while heading into a cabinet meeting, MacKinnon confirmed that conversations are continuing with members of other parties.
“I think very much so,” he said when asked whether the party is speaking with additional MPs. “I think that Canadians who live in Conservative ridings look at their MPs and wish they would spend more time proposing solutions and participating in this great project on which we’ve embarked to build Canada stronger, diversify our supply chains, develop markets abroad and continue to push our economy forward.”
MacKinnon’s comments came a day after Lori Idlout, the MP for Nunavut, left the New Democratic Party to join the governing Liberal Party of Canada.
In recent months, the Liberals have also convinced three members of the Conservative Party of Canada to cross the floor: Matt Jeneroux, Michael Ma, and Chris d’Entremont.
The series of defections has highlighted growing political tensions in Ottawa as parties position themselves ahead of future parliamentary battles.
