Mark Carney says Canada and its allies are prepared to defend the Arctic as geopolitical tensions in the region continue to draw international attention.
Speaking Friday in Bardufoss after observing NATO’s Cold Response military exercises, Carney said cooperation among allied nations is critical to maintaining security in the Arctic.
Carney held a joint news conference with Jonas Gahr Støre and Friedrich Merz following the exercise.
During the news conference, the leaders were asked about tensions related to demands from the administration of Donald Trump regarding Greenland. In response, they emphasized the territory’s right to determine its own future.
“It’s up to the people in Greenland and the King of Denmark to trace the future for the people in Greenland,” Støre said.
He added that any suggestion a country could take land from another nation is unacceptable.
“It’s not acceptable to international law, and especially something which should be unheard of among allies,” Støre said.
