Calgary is set to see up to 379 new affordable housing units for Indigenous residents thanks to the city’s Indigenous Housing Program. On Monday, officials announced the recipients of the $33 million financial award—known in Blackfoot as Maa’toomaa’taapii Aoko’iyii’piaya—supporting 24 projects led by 16 Indigenous nations and non-profits.
The program marks the largest investment in Indigenous housing in Calgary’s history. Mayor Jeromy Farkas called it a “meaningful step forward” for the city’s Indigenous communities.
Chief Samual Crowfoot of Sikiska Nation expressed gratitude, noting the project will benefit members living off-reserve in Calgary and have a lasting impact on families.
Five projects will receive $20.2 million to construct 147 new homes, while four projects will use $10.6 million to purchase land for up to 232 additional units. The initiative aims to address housing shortages and strengthen community support for Indigenous residents in the city.
