Calgary, Alberta _ A Calgary-based advocacy group has filed a legal injunction in an effort to stop the reintroduction of fluoride into the city’s drinking water.

Safe Water Calgary submitted the application to the Alberta Court of King’s Bench, arguing that fluoridation poses a public health risk. The group says the potential harms outweigh any dental benefits.

“It’s not safe, it’s not effective, and we have good science to prove that,” said Dr. Robert Dickson, founder of the organization.

The issue of fluoridation has long divided public opinion in Calgary. In the most recent plebiscite held in 2021, 62 per cent of voters supported reintroducing fluoride to the water system after it had been removed a decade earlier.

Since the vote, the City of Calgary has invested more than $28 million upgrading both of its water treatment plants to accommodate fluoride dosing.

While Safe Water Calgary opposes the measure, many dental professionals and health organizations continue to advocate for fluoridation, citing decades of research showing its effectiveness in preventing tooth decay.

The case is now before the courts as the city moves forward with implementation.
