Afghanistan launches ‘large-scale’ operation against Pakistani forces after air strikes

Afghanistan has launched a “large-scale” military operation against Pakistani army positions along the countries’ shared border, Taliban officials have said, following recent air strikes carried out by Islamabad.

The Taliban’s chief spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said late on Thursday that the offensive targeted multiple Pakistani military posts.

He said “numerous” Pakistani soldiers had been killed and others captured during the operation. The BBC has not been able to independently verify those claims.

Pakistan’s information ministry said what it described as “unprovoked fire” from Afghan territory was being met with an “immediate and effective response by Pakistan’s security forces”. It also claimed that Afghan forces had suffered heavy casualties, without providing details.

The escalation comes after Pakistan carried out overnight air strikes inside Afghanistan earlier this week. Taliban officials said at least 18 people were killed in those strikes.

Islamabad has repeatedly accused militant groups of using Afghan territory to launch attacks inside Pakistan, an allegation the Taliban government denies.

The two countries share a long and disputed border, often referred to as the Durand Line, where tensions have flared periodically in recent years.
