Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre paused before answering when asked to sum up the past year — a reflection of a turbulent period for both him and his party.
Speaking with The Globe and Mail during a series of year-end interviews, Poilievre addressed a year dominated by political setbacks, including the high-profile departure of two Conservative MPs who crossed the floor to join Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party.
Those surprise defections left the minority Liberal government just one seat short of a majority, raising fresh uncertainty about whether additional MPs might follow — and whether Poilievre’s leadership could withstand further losses.
The departures capped a difficult year in which Poilievre failed to unseat the Liberals in the spring general election, despite his party leading in national polls for months before the campaign. Since then, calls for change in Conservative leadership have emerged both within the party and from outside observers.
Poilievre, however, remains optimistic. He described the year as demanding but formative, suggesting it could pave the way for future gains.
“It was a busy, challenging year that I think will set the stage for more success in 2026,” he said.
