Alberta Health Services (AHS) is currently investigating whether two hospitalizations and dozens of gastrointestinal illness reports are linked to the Saskatoon Farm, a popular farmers market located just east of Okotoks, Alberta.

In a statement released Thursday, AHS confirmed that 88 individuals have reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness after visiting the farm. The agency has since ordered the closure of the farm’s restaurant, a move that coincided with the business’s own decision to voluntarily shut its doors on July 23 due to concerns over its water supply.

According to AHS, the closure will remain in effect until water test results are received and the kitchen undergoes a full deep cleaning. The source of the illness has not yet been confirmed, and officials say a comprehensive investigation is still underway. This includes further environmental inspections, outreach to affected individuals to collect symptom and food history details, and an in-depth review of the farm’s drinking water system.

Saskatoon Farm issued a statement Wednesday, saying it is fully cooperating with AHS and that the temporary closure impacts its restaurant, bakery, and Red House facility.

“At this time, we do not have any information regarding when our food service facilities will be permitted to reopen. We will continue to keep our patrons informed as we receive further updates from AHS,” the farm stated.

As a result of the ongoing situation, the farm has cancelled its Fiesta Friday event scheduled for July 25. Additionally, food services will not be available during the upcoming Wellness Immersion Event on July 26.
