More than 10,000 Air Canada flight attendants could walk off the job early Saturday morning, triggering a company lockout if no last-minute agreement is reached.

The airline preemptively cancelled about 500 flights scheduled for Friday, warning of a complete shutdown starting 1 a.m. ET Saturday should talks with the Air Canada component of CUPE fail.

Customers are being notified of cancellations by email and text. Air Canada is urging travellers to avoid going to the airport unless they have a confirmed booking for a flight still listed as operating.

CUPE says it remains ready to negotiate to prevent a work stoppage, while the airline has asked Ottawa to intervene and order binding arbitration.

On Friday, CUPE released new Abacus Data polling suggesting 59 per cent of Canadians believe the federal government should respect flight attendants’ right to strike, even if it disrupts travel. The survey of 1,500 people, conducted Thursday and Friday, also found 88 per cent agree attendants should be paid for all work-related duties — including boarding, delays, and safety checks — a key sticking point in the dispute.
