Calgary, Alberta _ Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Ontario Premier Doug Ford have signed two memorandums of understanding in Calgary, committing to explore the possibility of building new pipelines and rail lines between their provinces, as well as expanding interprovincial trade in goods such as alcohol and vehicles.
One of the agreements outlines a feasibility study for transportation routes that would link Alberta’s oil, gas, and critical minerals to James Bay in eastern Ontario, with a promise to use Ontario-produced steel in any future development. The goal of the study is to lay the groundwork for private sector involvement in building these potential energy corridors.
Premier Smith said the agreements highlight both provinces’ shared focus on attracting investment and improving market access for their major industries.
Premier Ford emphasized the need to strengthen Canada’s economy in light of tariffs imposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump. He added that he hopes the federal government will support the effort by rolling back several energy regulations, including net-zero targets.
