A heated dispute between the Alberta government and the province’s 51,000 teachers is escalating into a full-scale advertising battle, with both sides accusing each other of dishonesty.
On Wednesday, Finance Minister Nate Horner’s office confirmed that the government is preparing to launch its own ad campaign to counter messaging from the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA), which has already been running its campaign for several weeks.
“The government must now correct the false narrative the ATA has created,” Horner said in a statement.
His office noted that details such as the cost, platform, and launch date of the government’s campaign are still being finalized but will be announced soon.
Earlier in the week, Premier Danielle Smith acknowledged that the ATA has been sharing its message through a variety of channels, including movie theatre ads.
“We will be sharing our perspective as well,” Smith told reporters. “We hope it will resonate with both teachers and parents.”
Meanwhile, negotiations between the province and the ATA over a new collective agreement for teachers in public, separate, and francophone schools across Alberta have stalled, with no meetings held since last week.
