The Alberta government is set to introduce legislation today ordering thousands of striking teachers back to work, bringing an end to a weeks-long strike that began on October 6.
Premier Danielle Smith says the job action has gone on too long and is negatively affecting students. She had warned that unless an 11th-hour deal was reached, her government would move forward with back-to-work legislation to get kids back in classrooms.
Talks between the province and the Alberta Teachers’ Association have remained stalled over wages and classroom conditions. The government’s latest proposal includes a 12 per cent wage increase over four years and the hiring of 3,000 additional teachers.
ATA president Jason Schilling says educators are standing up for roughly 750,000 students and deserve to have their voices heard. He adds that being forced back to work without meaningful dialogue feels disrespectful to teachers across the province.
