Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides are set to announce new provincial steps to tackle rising classroom complexity during an event in Calgary at 11 a.m. They will be joined by Nicole Buchanan, chair of Red Deer Public Schools.
The announcement follows the passage of Bill 2, the Back to School Act, last month. At the time, the government pledged to create a task force to address what officials describe as growing “classroom complexity”—a term used to capture increasing incidents of aggression, behavioural challenges, and heightened special-learning needs among students.
To confront these issues, the province established the Aggression and Complexity in Schools Action Team in June. The 25-member group—made up of education leaders and representatives from school boards across Alberta—is examining policies, teacher training, inclusive-education supports, funding models, and cross-sector coordination.
However, the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) has criticized the initiative, noting it was excluded from the task force. In a statement issued after Bill 2 passed, the ATA said leaving teachers out of the process shows “this government’s reluctance to acknowledge teachers as experts in education,” adding that educators’ lived experiences are “necessary and invaluable” to the work ahead.
