The Alberta government is set to release its updated school library book policy today, following backlash over its initial directive.

Originally, school boards were ordered to remove any materials containing sexual content — including written passages, audio, illustrations, and images — by the end of the month. That led Edmonton’s public school board to flag 200 titles for removal, among them Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. The move sparked widespread criticism, including from Atwood herself.

The government paused the directive last week, with Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides saying officials needed more time to ensure the order was clear.

Premier Danielle Smith later confirmed the policy would be revised to target only books with sexual images, ensuring literary classics and other written works remain available on school shelves.
