Health-care professionals across Alberta will hold rallies Thursday, demanding a stronger contract from the provincial government.

The demonstrations come after members of the Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA) rejected a tentative agreement with Alberta Health Services (AHS) last month. Between Aug. 28 and Sept. 10, 78 per cent of eligible members voted, with 59.37 per cent rejecting the deal.

Although the association has not called a strike vote, Thursday’s “Day of Unity” will see members gather at their worksites to push for improved wages and working conditions.

“Albertans deserve expert medical care delivered by a team of well-supported and well-resourced professionals,” said HSAA president Mike Parker. “But right now, unsustainable workloads, constant short staffing, and severe burnout are driving professionals out of the health system and out of Alberta, creating a crisis in our hospitals and health centres.

“The government’s last offer failed to address these issues, and now we are asking Albertans to join us in supporting health professionals so they can deliver the care we deserve.”
