The union representing thousands of Alberta health-care workers has issued strike notice, signalling escalating tensions in negotiations with the province.
In a statement posted Wednesday morning, the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) — representing Locals 041, 043, 044, 045 and 046 — said notice was formally served at 7:55 a.m.
“Mediation was not successful. We did not reach a tentative agreement nor receive recommendations from our mediator,” the union said.
AUPE urged the provincial government and employers to take the notice seriously and return to the bargaining table with an improved offer, noting there is still time to reach a fair agreement before a strike begins.
A strike date has not yet been set.
If workers walk off the job, those affected would include licensed practical nurses, health-care aides, and other frontline staff.
