The Alberta Health Services (AHS) CEO appointed after a high-profile shakeup earlier this year is now off the job himself.

AHS confirmed Wednesday that CEO Andre Tremblay, a former senior provincial health bureaucrat, has taken a leave of absence. Hospitals Minister Matt Jones has named Erin O’Neill, an AHS executive, as interim CEO, his office said in an email.

Tremblay stepped into the top role 11 months ago after the government dismissed both the AHS board and then-CEO Athana Mentzelopoulos. She later filed a wrongful dismissal lawsuit against AHS and the province, alleging she was removed for launching an investigation into contracts with private surgical companies she claimed were connected to government officials.

Her allegations triggered a political storm over procurement practices and possible conflicts of interest within AHS, leading to investigations by the auditor general, the RCMP and a retired judge.
