Alberta’s legislative assembly resumes today with a throne speech marking the start of the fall sitting — and mounting tension outside the legislature as the province’s teachers strike enters its third week.

Thousands of teachers are expected to rally during the speech, as the government signals it may soon bring forward back-to-work legislation. Premier Danielle Smith has said such a bill could be introduced as early as next week if the walkout continues.

Government House Leader Joseph Schow says the fall session will see at least 15 new bills, including measures to curb long ballot protests during elections and legislation to limit how professional regulatory bodies oversee their own members — a reform Smith first pledged a year ago.

Opposition NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi criticized the government’s agenda, arguing it overlooks the issues most important to Albertans, including affordability and health care.
