More than 1,200 local leaders from across Alberta are in Calgary this week for the annual Alberta Municipalities Convention and Trade Show, where discussions are focused on the future of the province’s cities, towns and villages.
The three-day event, which began Wednesday at the Telus Convention Centre, brings together mayors, councillors and municipal officials to meet with provincial representatives and debate key issues shaping their communities.
This year’s top priorities include securing long-term funding, addressing housing pressures and finding ways to keep municipalities sustainable amid rising costs. Alberta Municipalities says local councils are being squeezed between inflation, reduced provincial support and increasing financial responsibilities from other levels of government — all while trying to keep property taxes low.
The organization is calling for a comprehensive review of how municipalities are funded, including the possibility of a reset to the province’s property tax system.
Premier Danielle Smith is scheduled to address delegates on Thursday, followed by Opposition Leader Naheed Nenshi on Friday.
Over the coming days, delegates will also debate resolutions related to infrastructure investment, public safety and climate adaptation.
