Calgary, Alberta _ Alberta’s oil production dropped sharply in May, hitting its lowest level in two years as wildfires and maintenance shutdowns disrupted oilsands operations.

According to provincial data released Thursday, output fell by 397,000 barrels per day, down to 3.61 million barrels daily — the weakest production level since May 2023. Oilsands production, which makes up the bulk of Alberta’s output, declined by 384,000 barrels per day, with mined output sinking to its lowest point in over four years.

The decline was driven largely by wildfires, including one near Cold Lake that forced major producers — Cenovus Energy, Canadian Natural Resources, and MEG Energy — to cut back approximately 350,000 barrels per day in late May and early June. Scheduled maintenance work also contributed to the drop, with MEG Energy reporting its lowest production figures since at least 2019.

The oilsands, home to the world’s third-largest crude reserves, remain a cornerstone of Canada’s energy sector, making any disruption significant both provincially and nationally.
