On Wednesday, the Alberta government announced its intention to submit a proposal for a new oil pipeline stretching from Alberta to northwestern British Columbia. The application will be filed with the federal Major Projects Office, a new agency tasked with expediting nationally significant infrastructure projects. The submission is expected by spring of next year.

“This project application is about more than a pipeline; it’s about unlocking Canada’s full economic potential,” said Premier Danielle Smith in a statement.

The initiative will be developed in collaboration with an advisory group that includes major Canadian pipeline companies — Enbridge Inc., Trans Mountain Corp., and South Bow Corp.

A central focus of the proposal will be Indigenous co-ownership and involvement, which the province says will guide the project from the outset.

“By doing this the right way from Day 1 with Indigenous partners and industry expertise, we will deliver a proposal that proves this project is undeniably in the national interest,” Smith added.

To support early development work, Alberta is committing $14 million toward planning, engineering assessments, cost evaluations, and early Indigenous engagement.

“The goal of this planning phase is to outline the general route and capacity of the pipeline, identify costs, and demonstrate the national value of this project,” said Energy Minister Brian Jean.
