The Alberta government has announced it will now cover the cost of COVID-19 vaccinations for health-care workers, partially reversing an earlier decision.
Two months ago, the province said that most residents, including front-line health workers, would have to pay for their COVID-19 shots this fall.
The initial move drew criticism from public health experts and health-care unions, who argued it was irresponsible to make essential workers pay for protection on the job.
Premier Danielle Smith said the original decision aimed to reduce waste, noting that around $135 million had previously been spent on unused vaccines.
While the government has yet to confirm how much the general public will pay, the estimated price per dose is about $110.
Vaccinations will also remain free for individuals with compromised immune systems, people receiving social assistance, and seniors living in congregate care settings.
