A newly enacted provincial order governing school library materials has led several Alberta school divisions to remove dozens of books from shelves, though the specific titles have not been made public.
The directive requires school boards to ensure students do not have access to explicit or graphic content. In response, the Calgary Board of Education (CBE), Alberta’s largest school division, identified 44 books for removal, according to spokesperson Joanne Anderson.
Anderson said the removed titles represent a very small fraction of the roughly 700,000 books available across CBE school libraries.
Edmonton Public Schools also compiled a list of 34 books to be pulled from schools, spokesperson Kim Smith confirmed in an email Monday. The division has approximately 480,000 titles in its libraries.
Smith emphasized the list is not final. “It’s important to note that the list is not exhaustive; it is a living document that can be adjusted,” she wrote.
Both school divisions declined to release the names of the removed books. Smith said the Edmonton Public School Board considers its list an internal document.
Meanwhile, the Edmonton Catholic School Division said its review resulted in six titles being removed from shelves. A spokesperson did not disclose which books were affected.
