Alberta’s Public Safety Minister says the province will not back down in its fight against violent organized crime, declaring that the safety of Albertans is “non-negotiable.”
Speaking on Red FM with host Rishi Nagar, Minister Mike Ellis said the government is taking a hard stance against the Bishnoi gang, an alleged transnational criminal network recently listed as a terrorist entity by the federal government.
“The call to ask the federal government to designate the Lawrance Bishnoi gang as a terrorist organization was prompted by credible intelligence,
The premier and I called for the Bishnoi gang to be declared a terrorist group on July 14th, 2025.” Minister said.
Ellis pointed to a growing series of violent incidents across Alberta, including shootings, arsons, and threats targeting members of the South Asian community that are believed to be connected to the gang’s activities.
“This is not something that we are going to tolerate in Alberta, and we are thankful the federal government took over the advice to declare them a terrorist organization,” he added.
Ellis said Alberta’s police services, including Edmonton and Calgary, are working with national and international partners to disrupt gang operations and protect the public.
“My message to the gang members is simple,” Ellis said. “You are not welcome here.”
