Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand met with her Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, in Beijing on Thursday, as Canada signals a potential reset in its strained relationship with China.

During the meeting, Wang told Anand that Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit represents a “turning point” in bilateral relations, adding that recent engagement could open new prospects for cooperation at a time of unprecedented and complex global change.

The talks come ahead of Carney’s scheduled bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday. While in Beijing, the prime minister is also expected to meet with China’s second- and third-most powerful leaders, including the premier who oversees the country’s economy and the chair of the National People’s Congress.

The Liberal government is facing mounting pressure at home to secure relief from Chinese agricultural tariffs that have hurt producers in Atlantic Canada and the West. Any progress, however, is likely to involve difficult trade-offs, particularly around Canada’s levies on Chinese electric vehicles.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has repeatedly warned that rolling back EV tariffs would threaten domestic manufacturing jobs, underscoring the political and economic stakes as Ottawa navigates its latest diplomatic push with Beijing.
