The head of bargaining for the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) has abruptly resigned after a pivotal meeting with the provincial government, as the prospect of a strike looms.
In a social media post Thursday evening, Peter MacKay confirmed his decision to step down as chair of the Central Table Bargaining Committee. “I’m just writing to let you know that I am resigning as CTBC chair effective immediately,” he wrote in an email to the ATA’s Provincial Executive Council, later sharing the same message publicly. “I was hoping to see things through to the end of this round of bargaining, but I don’t see a path to doing so at this point.”
MacKay’s departure came only hours after the government and the ATA reached an agreement to resolve a labour board complaint, narrowing the scope of ongoing contract negotiations.
Following a resolution conference at the Alberta Labour Relations Board, a consent order was issued to settle an unfair labour practice complaint filed by the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA) against the ATA.
Finance Minister Nate Horner said the consent order makes clear that only three issues remain at the table:
- Timing for implementation of the unified salary grid
- The ATA’s proposed 1.5 per cent annual long-service allowance for teachers at the top of the grid
- Coverage of COVID-19 vaccinations
Horner stressed that contentious issues such as classroom complexity, class sizes, and student supports are not part of the current round of bargaining.
