Calgarians are set to experience a dramatic week of weather, with mild midweek conditions quickly giving way to a deep freeze before temperatures rebound to near spring-like levels early next week.
Environment Canada is warning of a sharp shift beginning Wednesday evening as clouds move in, bringing periods of snow and the risk of freezing rain. Between two and four centimetres of snow is forecast overnight, accompanied by north winds gusting up to 60 km/h. Temperatures will drop to –17 C, with a wind chill near –26.
“Here comes the cold snap,” said 660 NewsRadio meteorologist Kevin Stanfield. “We could see freezing rain close to 8 p.m. Wednesday, followed by up to five centimetres of flurries, mostly wrapping up by Thursday morning.”
Residents are urged to prepare for icy roads and protect themselves against frostbite during the bitter stretch.
On Thursday, snow will taper off early, leaving a mix of sun and cloud, but temperatures will continue to fall, reaching near –20 C by the afternoon. Wind chills approaching –30 will bring a high risk of frostbite.
The cold continues Friday, with a daytime high near –20 C and the possibility of additional snowfall overnight.
