Calgary city council is set to receive a long-awaited independent report examining the city’s major 2024 water main break.
In a social media post Tuesday, Mayor Jeromy Farkas announced the report will be delivered to council on Tuesday, followed by a special council meeting Wednesday afternoon.
During that meeting, the findings will be presented publicly by the independent panel, debated by council, and formally considered, allowing recommendations to be implemented without delay, the mayor said.
“The swift public release of this work reflects our clear commitment to accountability, learning, and strengthening the delivery of — and confidence in — Calgary’s essential water systems,” Farkas wrote.
The release comes amid growing pressure from councillors and the mayor for answers about what went wrong, particularly after another break occurred last week along the Bearspaw South feeder main.
Farkas emphasized transparency as the city prepares to review the report’s findings.
“Every step of the way we will be transparent with Calgarians — the good, the bad and the ugly,” he said. “And every step of the way, we’ll be as honest as possible about the challenges we’re facing.”
