Calgary is moving closer to a major transformation of its water system, with city council set to consider a plan that would put into action key recommendations following the Bearspaw South Feeder Main rupture.

The plan is based on an independent assessment of the massive water main break last year that caused widespread service disruptions and raised concerns about oversight, maintenance and future investment in the city’s water network.

City officials have turned the review’s conclusions into a four-phase strategy. The first three stages are already in progress or expected to launch later this year.

Among the central proposals are continuing the twinning of the Bearspaw South Feeder Main, creating a new Chief Operating Officer role to head a standalone water utility, and forming a city-owned corporation to manage Calgary’s water services.

Mayor Jeromy Farkas acknowledged the significant costs tied to the proposed changes but said major infrastructure projects must be evaluated with a long-term perspective rather than short-term financial impact alone.
