A suspicious package discovered Wednesday afternoon prompted the evacuation of the Judith Umbach Library in northeast Calgary.
Emergency responders were called to the scene around 1:05 p.m. after the item was found inside the library, located near Centre Street North and 64 Avenue.
Upon arrival, police assessed the situation and determined that the package required further investigation.
As a precaution, the library was evacuated and temporarily closed to the public.
Meanwhile, Calgary police had already been dealing with a separate suspicious package incident earlier in the day at a site in the city’s Manchester Industrial Area in the southwest. Authorities have confirmed that the two cases are not related.
“At this time, our resources are heavily dedicated to the ongoing incident in the Manchester Industrial Area; however, we are also working to assess the situation at the library,” the Calgary Police Service said in a statement.
