Thousands of Muslims in Calgary are set to celebrate Eid al-Fitr on Friday, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan, a period of fasting, reflection, and worship.
Imam Attaul Wahab of the northeast Calgary Baitun Nur Mosque said the festival brings “a sense of achievement for all the believers who have fulfilled all the conditions of fasting.” The mosque expects thousands of worshippers to attend the celebrations.
“During Ramadan, they have been fasting for the sake of Allah, spending more time in worship and remembrance of God, and reciting the Holy Qur’an regularly,” Wahab added.
Eid al-Fitr concludes Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. Observance follows the lunar calendar, so the dates of Ramadan and Eid vary each year depending on the first sighting of the crescent moon. The day is marked with prayers, family gatherings, and charitable giving.
