Calgary has been added to Environment and Climate Change Canada’s (ECCC) expanded heat warning as much of western Canada faces a stretch of unusually hot weather.
Daytime highs in the city are expected to run at least eight degrees above seasonal, with overnight lows near 14 C.
Across Alberta, temperatures will climb to 30 C or higher by Wednesday. However, heat warnings are not in place everywhere despite the widespread warmth. That’s because ECCC issues warnings only when daytime highs of at least 29 C are paired with overnight lows of 14 C or warmer for two or more days in a row.
Many rural areas are expected to dip into single-digit lows under mostly clear skies this week, keeping them outside the warning zone. Larger urban centres, including Calgary, tend to retain more heat overnight due to concrete and asphalt surfaces radiating warmth absorbed during the day.
