City of Calgary officials are warning that a significant boost in capital infrastructure spending is required next year — but they say it might be achievable without sharply raising taxes.

Administration projections show Calgary will need roughly $5 billion for infrastructure projects in the coming year, a more than 30 per cent jump from the $3.8 billion allocated this year.

Ward 10 Coun. Andre Chabot, the city’s longest-serving councillor, believes the goal is attainable without major tax or rate hikes, as long as the city secures additional funding from other sources, including private investment, the provincial government, and Ottawa.

“I don’t see $5 billion as an unrealistic target given the spending our city will require in the foreseeable future,” Chabot said.

He added that the figure accounts for multiple factors: population growth, new facilities such as recreation centers, replacing aging infrastructure, and ongoing road maintenance.
