Calgary police say the city is on pace to record more domestic violence incidents this year than in any of the past five.

Between January and September, officers responded to 3,592 reported incidents, surpassing the five-year average for the same period, which sits at 3,163. The statistics do not include victims under 18 or over 65.

Police note that a growing number of incidents occur after a relationship has ended, a period they describe as particularly high-risk. They also report that the number of male victims has increased for three consecutive years and is on track to exceed the five-year average—though men still make up less than one-third of all victims.

With November marking Family Violence Prevention Month, the Calgary Police Service is using the occasion to draw attention to the resources available to those experiencing abuse.

“Exiting an abusive relationship can be incredibly difficult,” said Staff Sgt. Glenn Andruschuk. “And as the statistics show, it can also be incredibly dangerous.”

Police are urging anyone facing violence or abuse in an intimate or family relationship to call 211 for confidential help and support.
