Calgary marked the opening of a new multi-service development in Cornerstone on September 2, 2025, with Mayor Jyoti Gondek, Councillor Raj Dhaliwal, Fire Chief Steve Dongworth, and community members in attendance.

The $16.8 million project’s first phase features a two-bay fire station and a Household Hazardous Waste drop-off site. A future phase could add non-market housing, though funding has yet to be secured.

The Cornerstone Fire Station, set to officially enter service on September 24, replaces the temporary Skyview Fire Station. It will improve emergency response for Cornerstone and surrounding neighborhoods, where call volumes have jumped 130 per cent since 2019. The hazardous waste facility will provide residents with safe disposal options for corrosive, flammable, and toxic materials.

Mayor Gondek highlighted the City’s commitment to integrated facility planning, while Councillor Dhaliwal stressed that multi-service developments help use land efficiently, reduce costs, and align with Council’s direction to maximize resources.

Designed to meet LEED Gold standards, the new fire station incorporates sustainability and firefighter wellness features, including advanced air filtration, low-emission materials, improved acoustics, and enhanced lighting and thermal comfort.

The project represents collaboration across Infrastructure Services, the Calgary Fire Department, Waste & Recycling Services, and the Chief Housing Office. City officials say it demonstrates a long-term vision of building safe, sustainable, and fiscally responsible communities.
