The Calgary Police Service says it is increasing patrols around synagogues and Hanukkah celebrations across the city following a deadly mass shooting in Australia over the weekend.

“We are saddened by the tragedy in Australia, where multiple people celebrating the start of Hanukkah were killed in a terrorist attack,” CPS said in a post on X.

Authorities say at least 15 people, including a child, were killed and 38 others injured when two gunmen opened fire on a crowd gathered for a Hanukkah celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday.

Investigators believe the suspects were a father and son. Police fatally shot one of the gunmen, while the other was taken into custody.

CPS says officers have connected with Calgary’s Jewish community to offer support and reassurance. Increased patrols are planned around places of worship and community events, including Monday night’s Menorah lighting at City Hall.

Police are also urging the public to report any suspicious activity around places of worship by contacting CPS.
