Calgary police are set to meet with community members Thursday evening as the city grapples with a growing number of extortion-related incidents, some of which have escalated into gun violence.

Authorities say there have been 13 reported extortion cases in Calgary since 2025, including a recent shooting in the northeast community of Redstone. In addition, police have linked at least 10 other shootings to similar criminal activity, raising concerns about public safety and organized intimidation tactics.

Investigators say the incidents often follow a consistent pattern, involving threats, demands for money and sustained pressure on victims designed to discourage them from contacting police. Underreporting remains one of the biggest challenges, as victims may fear retaliation or further violence.

Calgary Police Chief Katie McLellan described the suspects as emboldened and unconcerned about where or when they act.

“These criminals are brazen. They don’t care what community they’re in or who may be caught in the middle,” McLellan said during a media availability on Jan. 29. She added that police are focused on prevention, early intervention and holding those responsible accountable through the courts.

Police note Calgary is not alone, with similar extortion cases reported in other Canadian cities, often targeting members of the South Asian community.
