Calgary police say they are investigating a series of extortion attempts targeting members of the city’s South Asian community, with suspects allegedly identifying themselves as members of a terrorist organization.

According to police, 12 extortion incidents have been reported since July 2025. Nine of those cases involved firearms, with shots fired at homes, businesses and vehicles. No injuries have been reported.

In a social media post issued Monday, police said victims received threats through WhatsApp messages and international phone calls. The messages were often accompanied by videos or threats of violent acts.

Investigators say the offenders have referenced the Lawrence Bishnoi gang in their communications. The group was recently designated as a terrorist organization in Canada.

Calgary police say they are actively investigating the incidents with support from partner agencies, including the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams. Additional patrols have also been deployed in affected areas to help deter further criminal activity.

“Public safety is our top priority,” police said. “We will continue to engage with the community, share updates and work to hold those responsible accountable.”
