Calgary police and fire officials are urging residents to follow municipal bylaws during Diwali and Bandi Chor Diwas celebrations, reminding the public that fireworks are not allowed within city limits without a permit.

Violating the Calgary Fire Bylaw could result in fines or, in more serious cases, criminal charges and possible jail time.

The reminder came during a recent interview on Red FM’s morning show, where host Rishi Nagar was joined by Community Safety Officer Kamaljeet Fischer and Calgary Police Service Const. Geoff Gawlinski.

CPS and the Calgary Fire Department responded to more than 200 fireworks-related calls on Diwali in 2024, Gawlinski said.

Gawlinski added that many residents may not realize it is illegal to possess, use, or discharge fireworks in Calgary without a valid permit.

Kamaljeet stressed that the purpose of the bylaw is to protect the safety of residents and their property—not to limit cultural celebration.

“These calls often relate to excessive noise, property damage, and serious distress for pets and wildlife,” she said. “They can also be deeply triggering for individuals living with trauma or PTSD.”

“We want everyone to enjoy Diwali, but in a safe and respectful way,” she added.

City officials are encouraging anyone who witnesses illegal fireworks activity or related disturbances to call 311 to report the incident.

More information about fireworks regulations can be found on the City of Calgary’s official website.
