Calgary police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man accused of carrying out a hate-motivated assault downtown last month.

The incident happened on Thursday, July 3, at about 1:40 p.m. A woman and her family were walking south on 4 Street SW near 10 Avenue SW when a man began shouting racial slurs at them from across the street.

Investigators say the man then crossed the street, verbally threatened the family, and approached them aggressively. When the woman stepped in front of her family to shield them, she was physically assaulted.

The family called police during the attack, but the suspect fled before officers arrived.

The suspect is described as about 5’8″ tall with a slim build, light brown hair, and a short beard. He was last seen wearing a red T-shirt, jeans, and black-and-white sneakers, and carrying a grey-and-black backpack.

Police note that hate motivation is considered during the sentencing stage of a criminal case. If a judge rules hate was a factor, it serves as an aggravating circumstance that can increase the offender’s sentence.

Anyone with information is asked to call Calgary police at 403-266-1234 or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.
