Calgary police say they are closely monitoring a “concerning trend” involving thieves targeting construction sites in newly built communities across the city.

Mike Brown, CEO of Trico Homes, which builds houses on Calgary’s outskirts, said theft has been a persistent problem for the past two to three years and has intensified recently.

“They’ll steal everything from the wrap on the house, to the lumber used to build it, to stripping copper wiring for electrical work, and even taking appliances out of homes before possession,” Brown said.

Brown explained the company explored hiring nighttime security, but the scale of the developments makes that unrealistic. “Unless you have security sitting at every house, it’s not possible,” he said.

In response, Trico Homes has turned to technology, using Apple AirTags to track stolen materials — similar to how travellers track lost luggage.

Calgary Construction Association CEO Bill Black said construction site theft is not new, but the problem has worsened as the city continues to expand and more developments are built.
