The City of Calgary is asking residents to weigh in on the future of Calgary Transit’s downtown free fare zone as part of a broader review of the program’s effectiveness.
The free fare zone covers a 2.5-kilometre portion of the Seventh Avenue transit corridor, allowing riders to use the CTrain at no cost within the downtown area. The initiative was first introduced in 1979 for buses and later extended to the CTrain when it began operating in 1981. It was designed to help people living and working downtown travel more easily.
City officials note that Calgary has changed significantly over the decades, along with commuting patterns and transit use. As a result, the city is reassessing whether the free fare zone continues to meet its intended goals.
Residents and transit users can share their views through an online survey available until March 8. The feedback collected will help the city evaluate the program’s value and guide recommendations on future fare policies in the downtown core.
