Japanese culture and tradition will take centre stage in Calgary this March with the launch of a new sumo festival, the first of its kind in Canada.

Sumo Fest 2026 will showcase the ancient sport of sumo wrestling alongside a Japanese-inspired market hall featuring food and drinks, local vendors, and cultural exhibitions. The two-day event will also include live sumo bouts with internationally recognized athletes.

“Sumo is a tradition that is more than a thousand years old and is deeply rooted in ceremony, respect, and cultural honour,” said Kim Aban, director of the Calgary Japanese Community Association. “Sumo Fest is an opportunity to share an important part of Japanese culture with the broader Calgary community, while creating a space for people to gather, learn, and engage in meaningful ways.”

Organizers hope the festival will introduce Canadians to sumo wrestling and spark greater interest in Japanese culture.

“Our goal is to give people their first taste of sumo in a way that inspires a deeper appreciation for Japanese culture and helps create future fans,” Aban said.

Sumo Fest 2026 runs from March 13 to 14 at the Nutrien Western Event Centre. Tickets start at $32, with a portion of proceeds supporting the Calgary Japanese Community Association and its cultural programming.
