Calgary Transit introduces mandatory mobile ticket validation to curb fare evasion

Calgary Transit riders using the My Fare app will face a new requirement starting Wednesday: validating their electronic tickets at station platforms or on buses before boarding.

The city is rolling out new yellow validation machines on CTrain platforms to combat fare evasion and encourage proper use of mobile tickets. Previously, riders simply had to activate their e-ticket on the My Fare app before boarding. Under the new system, once a ticket is activated in the app, it must also be scanned at the platform validator.

A green light on the validator means the fare is valid, while a red light signals an issue with proof of payment. Riders using day passes or monthly passes will also need to validate their pass at a platform scanner, but only on their first trip after activation.

Anyone caught riding without validating their fare risks a $250 fine. However, city officials say they will focus on educating the public during the initial rollout.

“We will be leading with an educational component and once we understand that the public is understanding how to use the system, we will be going forward with an enforcement program,” said Marcia Gonder, Calgary’s chief of public vehicle standards.

The move comes after the city determined that the new validation machines were necessary to reduce fare evasion and make sure that e-tickets are used correctly.

The changes take effect Wednesday morning across the CTrain system. Calgary Transit is encouraging riders to update their My Fare app, learn how to activate and validate their tickets, and allow extra time at stations to adjust to the new process.
