More than 100 new electric buses will soon be joining Calgary Transit’s fleet, replacing some of the city’s aging diesel vehicles.
Calgary Transit says 120 Nova LSFe+ electric buses will arrive starting in 2027, with all expected to be in service by 2028. The model, already operating in Banff, Toronto, and Ottawa, is built to handle Canadian weather and will primarily replace end-of-life diesel buses.
Manufactured by Nova Bus, a division of the Volvo Group, the new vehicles will have a similar look and feel to Calgary’s current compressed natural gas models. They’ll be deployed mainly on shorter routes and during peak hours, targeting high-density areas to improve service and reduce emissions.
“This investment means more reliable service, lower operating costs over time and cleaner air in our communities,” said Calgary Transit director Sharon Fleming in a statement. “It also allows us to grow our fleet in a cost-effective way and prepare for future service demand.”
The purchase is being funded through federal investments announced in 2023, when Ottawa committed $325 million for 259 new buses—building on a $165-million allocation the same year through the Zero Emission Transit Fund.
City officials say the latest order will expand the fleet, diversify fuel sources, and cut long-term operating costs.
