Calgary urges residents to conserve water as major feeder main shuts down for repairs

Residents of Calgary are once again being urged to conserve water as the city introduces another round of voluntary water restrictions.

City officials are asking Calgarians and people in nearby communities to take shorter showers, reduce toilet flushes, and limit overall water use. The request comes after the shutdown of the city’s major water pipeline, the Bearspaw South Feeder Main, which will remain closed for about a month while additional repair work is carried out.

The feeder main is a critical part of Calgary’s water system, supplying about 60 per cent of the city’s treated drinking water. Because of its importance, any disruption can significantly affect water availability across the region.

This marks the third time in the past two years that Calgary has introduced voluntary water-use restrictions due to ongoing problems with the aging pipeline. The most recent shutdown occurred in December when the pipe burst through the concrete beneath a major roadway, causing significant damage and prompting emergency repairs.

Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas is expected to address the situation later today. He will speak at a community resource centre set up to assist residents in neighbourhoods directly affected by the construction and repair work.
