A 27-year-old Calgary woman is facing charges after allegedly spitting on a cashier and making racist remarks during a confrontation at a southwest liquor store.

The incident happened around 5 p.m. on Friday at the Canadian Liquor store near Shawnessy Drive SW and Shawnessy Boulevard SW.

According to police, the woman entered the store and began verbally harassing both staff and customers. She allegedly directed personal questions at the cashier before spitting on her and making “racially charged remarks.”

Two customers who witnessed the altercation immediately called 911. Officers responded, and after reviewing security footage and interviewing witnesses, they arrested a suspect the following day.

Omet Markojoullo, 27, has been charged with assault. She is scheduled to appear in a Calgary courtroom in September.

The Calgary Police Service says its Hate Crime Prevention Team is assisting in the investigation to determine whether hate was a motivating factor in the incident.

“Hate incidents and crimes have no place in our community,” police said in a statement, urging anyone with further information to come forward.

Investigators are asking witnesses or anyone with knowledge of the incident to call police at 403-266-1234 or provide anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers.
