Some Calgary residents who live in their RVs say they feel let down after the city recommended against creating a permanent site for them to park.

“It’s fairly disappointing considering the housing affordability and availability that everyone is going through,” said camper James Wright. “To turn around and say they’re not going to give it any more consideration—it was a waste of time and a slap in the face.”

Tuesday’s recommendation comes after nearly a year of debate between RV owners and city officials.

Wright, who is on AISH (Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped), says health issues forced him to leave his job as a millwright. “I went from making $95,000 a year to $21,000,” he said. After losing his home to redevelopment in Ogden, Wright turned to his RV but says he can’t find rental housing under $1,500 a month.

A city report found that on-street RV living is relatively rare, with fewer than half of surveyed residents saying they would move to a dedicated site. Officials also cited high costs and long development timelines as reasons not to move forward.

The report will be presented to council’s community development committee on Thursday.

For now, Wright says he only has one request: a stable place to park.
