Aphrodite Deng has become the first Canadian to win the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship, defeating Singapore’s Xingtong Chen 2 and 1 in a 36-hole final on Saturday at the Atlanta Athletic Club.
The 15-year-old Calgary golfer capped off an impressive season with her third major junior title of the year, having already claimed victories at the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley in April and the Mizuho Americas Open in May.
With Saturday’s win, Deng secures spots in the 2025 U.S. Women’s Open at Riviera Country Club, as well as this year’s and next year’s U.S. Women’s Amateur.
“It really means a lot. I just can’t believe that I won,” Deng said following the match. “I didn’t really think about the end result because I knew there were a lot of good players here. I just tried to win each match.”
Deng held a commanding 4-up lead after the first 18 holes of the final. Chen, 16, who became the first player from Singapore to reach the championship match, twice narrowed the gap to two during the second round. She won the 34th hole with a par, but Deng sealed the victory on the 35th, matching Chen’s par to close out the match.
